Grandma's Chair...

Like most of you, I can't resist not stopping at a yard sale... Labor Day weekend I almost drove by one that looked like it had all kinds of vintage goodies. Trust me, I couldn't hit the brakes fast enough. A man and his friend were cleaning out Grandma's house. I spotted this old chair hidden under some old boxes.

The man saw me looking at it and told me I could have it. For free. It had been his grandmother's. He knew it was old and he didn't want anything to happen it it. So he gave it to me.

I took it home and gave it a gentle cleaning. Then I applied some soft, clear wax to protect it. That's all the chair needed to restore the finish.

I took a look on the web to see what the story is behind this little chair. From what I read, it's a Spindleback Windsor Chair - most likely made in Connecticut between 1780 - 1820. Definitely handmade - if you look at the spindles carefully, they all differ a little in diameter...

I think it's in nice condition considering it's age...still good and sturdy - even the stenciling is all intact!

I think Grandma really loved this chair and took good care of it...now, it's up to me to see that it stays that way...

Wayside Cottage...

This is a vintage sign that my son and I found at a yard sale a year ago. The woman that sold it to me said that she bought it at a barn sale years ago in Maine. Judging by the contruction, my guess is that it's probably from the 1930's - 40's.

It's double-sided, the center is made out of some sort of metal (aluminum?) is framed in wood, and is huge! It now hangs in my bedroom. I just love it - did I mention that I only paid twenty dollars for it?

Here it is on my blog page...

and here it is hung on my bedroom wall - my apologies for the slightly crooked picture - I just want to give you an idea of how it really appears...

Wouldn't this be fun to reproduce? (If any of you ever do so, please let me know - I'd love to see it!)

I have been yard sale-ing for years and this sign is one of my favorite finds. So, when I was trying to come up with a good blog name - this is what came to mind. So here you have it - "The Wayside Cottage".

Thanks for stopping by!
